Solar Lighting
How do solar lights work?
Each light fixture has a solar panel that converts sunlight into electrical energy. When the sun is shining, this electrical energy is stored in one or more batteries. When the sun goes down, energy from the batteries powers the light.
Do I have to turn solar lights on and off manually?
No. Most exterior solar lighting contains a sensor that automatically turns the light on when it gets dark, and off when it gets light.
How do solar lights differ from other exterior lights?
Most solar lights use LED’s (Light Emitting Diodes) instead of conventional incandescent bulbs. LED’s are semiconductors that act like tiny light bulbs when an electrical current passes through them. They are very efficient, don’t have a filament that burns out, and produce very little heat. LED’s also last a very long time, typically 100,000 hours.
What are the advantages of solar lights?
Solar lighting is easy to install, requires little maintenance, and offers a great deal of flexibility. And because solar power is an environmentally friendly, clean and renewable resource, you’re making a smart choice for yourself and the environment. Finally, because sunlight is free, you save money.
How long do solar lights stay on?
The length of time that the lights stay on at night depends on the amount of sun exposure they receive during the day. More sun during the day means more light at night. That’s why it’s import to position your lights so the solar panel receives the most direct sunlight possible. Trees, shrubs, your house, or any other object that casts a shadow across the solar panel will affect nighttime performance.
Are solar lights as bright as regular lights?
With a few exceptions, solar lights are generally not as bright as electrically powered lighting, providing a softer glow rather than a harsh light.
Do solar lights require much maintenance?
Not at all. Just keep the solar panel clean and replace the batteries when needed.
How often do the batteries need replacing?
The batteries are designed to handle a minimum of 1000 deep discharges which translates to 1000 nights of light. So the batteries should last for 2 to 3 years. When they do need replacing, the rechargeable batteries are easily found at a local store.
Will I ever have to replace a light bulb?
The LED’s in solar lighting are not replaceable. However, because they are so efficient, don’t have a filament that burns out, and produce very little heat, they last an extremely long time. The rated life of an LED is about 100,000 hours. With an average usage of 10 hours per night, the LED should last for about 25 years.
